The problem

Accessing the right allied health service can be difficult and fragmented

People accessing NDIS support may need multiple allied health services, but finding the right provider, understanding available services, and managing referrals can create unnecessary friction.

Cared brings multiple allied health services into a single referral experience, helping people access services across Australia. The platform currently promotes access to 8 allied health services through 1 referral.

The challenge was to make this process feel simple, clear, and trustworthy, especially for users who may already be navigating a complex support system.

The users

Designing around the person finding support

Sarah Mitchell
Support Coordinator

Sarah is looking for appropriate allied health support and may need several services as part of her care journey. She wants to understand her options without navigating multiple providers and referral processes.

Goals

  • Find appropriate support
  • Access services quickly
  • Understand the process
  • Reduce administrative effort

Needs

  • Clear service information
  • Simple referral process
  • Trustworthy providers
  • Easy-to-follow next steps

Pain points

  • Finding suitable providers can be time-consuming
  • Multiple services can mean multiple referral processes
  • Healthcare information can feel overwhelming
  • Uncertainty around what happens after a referral
Users shouldn’t have to understand the healthcare system before they can access the care they need.
Our thinking

From assessment to improvement

We approached the experience around a simple principle: make the next step obvious.

Rather than presenting Cared as a collection of individual healthcare services, we focused on communicating the broader value of having access to multiple allied health services through a simpler referral journey.

The experience was structured to progressively answer the questions users are likely to have: What is Cared? Can you help me? What services are available? How does the referral work? What happens next?

We also paid particular attention to trust and clarity. Healthcare journeys can already feel complicated, so the interface needed to avoid unnecessary jargon and communicate important information in a calm, approachable way.

The result was a more focused experience that connects:

Service discovery
Understanding
Referral

while keeping the user focused on accessing support rather than navigating a complex system.

Constraints

Simplifying a complex healthcare ecosystem

Cared operates across multiple allied health services and needs to communicate information that can vary depending on the user’s needs and circumstances.

The main challenge was balancing completeness with simplicity. Users need enough information to make an informed decision, but too much healthcare terminology and detail can create friction.

We therefore prioritized information based on user intent and created clearer pathways from discovering a service to understanding the referral process.
