The problem

Understanding your cycle shouldn’t depend on guesswork

Traditional cycle tracking can rely heavily on manual logging and assumptions around standard cycle patterns. FemTek was created to provide a more data-driven way to understand menstrual and reproductive health through a smart ring worn overnight.

The FemTek ring collects biometric data including basal body temperature, heart rate, and heart rate variability, then connects with its mobile experience to turn overnight measurements into meaningful cycle insights.

The challenge was to make this complex biometric information feel simple, personal, and easy to understand without overwhelming users with technical health data.

The goals

Aligning user needs with business objectives

User goals

Help users make sense of their cycle and understand changes in their body through clear, accessible insights.

Business goals

Create a seamless experience between the FemTek smart ring and mobile app so users can easily access their collected data.

Design goals

Turn detailed biometric information into a calm, approachable experience that supports everyday cycle awareness.

The users

Designing around what users actually need

Sarah Mitchell
Health-Focused Woman

Sarah wants to better understand her menstrual cycle and body without relying entirely on manual tracking. She is interested in fertility awareness, cycle patterns, and understanding how her body changes over time.

Goals

  • Understand her cycle
  • Track important body signals
  • Recognise ovulation patterns
  • Improve body awareness

Needs

  • Clear cycle information
  • Easy-to-understand insights
  • Minimal manual tracking
  • Reliable wearable data

Pain points

  • Traditional tracking can require frequent manual input
  • Standard cycle assumptions may not reflect every user’s body
  • Health data can be difficult to interpret
  • Too much information can make cycle tracking feel complicated
Users don’t need more health data — they need a clearer way to understand the data their body is already producing.
Our thinking

From assessment to improvement

We approached the experience around a simple principle: turn complex body data into understandable insights.

Instead of presenting the smart ring as another piece of wearable technology, the experience focused on the user’s relationship with their cycle and body.

The journey was structured around the questions users naturally have: What’s happening in my body? Where am I in my cycle? What does my data mean? What should I understand from it?

FemTek’s ring is designed to collect data while the user sleeps, reducing the need for intrusive daytime tracking. The device monitors biometric signals overnight and syncs the information with the companion app.

The interface therefore needed to make the transition from:

Raw biometric data
Cycle information
Personal understanding

feel natural. We also focused on reducing technical language and presenting information progressively, so users could explore deeper insights without being overwhelmed at first glance.

Constraints

Making biometric data feel human

FemTek combines wearable hardware, health data, cycle tracking, and personalised insights within one product ecosystem.

The main challenge was balancing data depth with simplicity. The ring can collect thousands of overnight measurements, including basal body temperature, heart rate, and heart rate variability. However, users don’t necessarily want to see every measurement. They need to understand what the data means for their cycle.

We therefore prioritised the information hierarchy around recognition, context, and action, allowing users to understand their current cycle information first and explore more detailed data when needed.
